Essay #2

David Mcbean                                   BULLING                                                                                       August 15, 2011

Bulling has had a gigantic impact in my life. Being a Jamaican coming into the United States not speaking like the other kids was very difficult. When I first started going to school in the United States school was ok for like some years until I went to my next school where they started to make fun of my voice.
On the first day attending school in the United States, everything was strange, the reason that being a Jamaican coming to a new country not speaking as fluently or dressing like the other kids was very hard.
Days up on days past  Everything was going fine until one day when my teacher moved me to a new class then that’s where everything started to downhill, people started to make fun of me, saying that I talked wearied and I dressed funny . It started to bother me because this was an everyday thing   everyday my face would just build up so much anger that in any given second, I would pop, but I tried to keep it in. One thing I remembered was that was much taller than me and triple my size used to pick on me every day until one day  I got mad and decided to fight him.
While trying to sole things with violence, I knew that it would not work, so I decided to talk things out. While doing this I started to tell him how I felt and that I felt bad because he was making fun of me and it leaded to me having to fight you. In addition, you made me feel like I was nobody and that no one like me or no one cared if I was even a student at the school. Time past by and after all, of this talking we decided to become friends and work this situation out.
Bulling affects everyone in life weather you coming from a different county or it’s the way you look or your background, we all go through it and that doesn’t mean you have to fight about it cause that wont help. The best thing to deal with this situation is by talking it out and if that does not work then talk to a teacher or a parent about it.

Time Management

What I learned today about time management is that we should use our time efficiently. what I can do to manage my time in high school is to to cut your work in half some you can have more time for yourself. The changes that I will make in my schedule this year is to wake up earlier to reach school on time. One change the i would need in college is to do my home work more often.

Social Topic

The topic that I chose was Bullying. The reason why I chose this particular topic was that being a Jamaican coming up to the United States, it was very had to adapt to the way the kids spoke, so they made fun of me. The reason why I think this topic will represent me to a College admission officer is the through all the bulling I overcame all the obstacle I faced and did what I was supposed to do to become something one in life. The impression that I would like this essay to on other life’s is that thought every obstacles  you face or anything pertaining in your home, you just have to break free from all those thing that are holding you back and look at the prize that is ahead.

Scholarships

Save Now
The Scholarships that is beast suited for me is: Toyota/Joshua Darby Scholarship,Malcolm X Scholarship for Exceptional Courage,MasterCard Worldwide Special Support Program,Keck Foundation Scholarship,Joseph and Sylvia Slifka Foundation Scholarship. The reason for these choices is because they are in my GPA range and I think I can benefit from them. Well while looking I have seen many Scholarships that were good but I did not have the requirement needed, but I know that I can achieve them. So of the Scholarships u had to have a 3.0 or up but I don’t have a GPA of a 3.0 or higher so I had to look for the 2.0s.

College essay #1

DavidMcbean
07/21/2011
                                  Time taken

During our educational careers, we encounter numerous teachers; some are good and others are bad. Several teachers never have time for their students, or simply do not show a sense of dedication to their jobs or demonstrate caring for students, in my opinion, that is not a teacher.  Teachers are supposed to be thrilling, diligent and loving people. In my experience as a student, I never encountered a teacher that showed such a great deal of dedication, care until I was in the 7th grade, and met Mrs. Freidman.  She was pleasant, flexible, understanding but strict during work time.
When I reflect on my favorite teacher, I imagine Mrs. Freidman. Mrs. Freidman is a very dedicated person, someone that always drives herself to give a 150% of her time to help those in need. Mrs. Freidman was the solution to me liking my English class. Before Mrs. Freidman came along, I did not like to read or write because writing was very frustrating.  The idea of having to write always made me evade any assignments.  Mrs. Freidman changed all those feelings because she made learning enjoyable; brought in movies, fun books, and other educational tools to facilitate our education in an amusing way.  All the materials she brought in fascinated us and stimulated our interests.
She was also the type of teacher when you needed extra help she would take her lunch period time to help you with your problems, from then I knew that no other teacher  could ever match up to Mrs. Freidman. Her enthusiasm was present in her teaching; she created personalized worksheets, hands on experiments, and provided engaging class discussions. Meanwhile, learning stopped being a mandatory obligation; it became a personal obligation. I owe Mrs. Freidman all the time and hard effort she put into my education, she took the time and energy to guide me.  I have high regard for Mrs. Friedman as a teacher, role model, motivator, friend, and person for all she does for all her students.
Of all the things Mrs. Freidman instilled in me, she gave me one piece of advice that will stay with me for the rest of my life. 'Nothing in life is hard, you just have to make everything you do in life fun, and then everything will become better." That is the reason why I chose Mrs. Freidman as an inspiration she is more than a teacher she is a friend. I will apply this lesson to my future in my life, when I have a difficult project or work.

Weighing the advantages and disadvantages of living at home versus living on campus

When I entered the College bound program on July 5, I already had in my mind Stony Brook University. While researching, I learned many important facts such as tuition costs, distance and travel, location, different programs and requirements.  I would love to live on a university campus.  My main reason for wanting to live on a campus is I being away from home, having lots of time for extracurricular activity.  I am FREE! Besides, a disadvantage of me living on a Campus is not spending time with family and friends, and having to pay for room and board.

Which S.U.N.Y College best fits me?

The S.U.N.Y College that suits me best is Stony Brook University. I have always been interested in this university because I follow the Football team.   While researching, I have grasped a new interest in this school because it offers a variety of Graphic Design courses and possibilities. I learned they require a very specific GPA to attend this school. The GPA required is 91 or 3.6 with a score a 590-690 on the SAT. At this time, reaching a 91 overall average is a reachable goal I know I can reach in one year.

My Smart Goals

My goals as a current freshman are to attend Lehman College.  After two years, I will transfer to Syracuse University to master Graphic Designing skills in order to get a well paying job. The current GPA for attending Lehman is 85.3, I currently have a 74.17 GPA and I plan by January of 2012, I will bring up my GPA to a solid 80. I will achieve this goal by doing the following steps:
1.      I will focus in class and participate in class two times a week.
2.      Do my work in class every day.
3.      Study notes 10-15 minutes a day, especially if there is a test the next day.
